The GIB Diploma Programme at the German International School Jeddah

At the German International School Jeddah (DISJ), we are proud to offer the Gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (GIB-DP) in Grades 11 and 12—a globally recognized and academically rigorous program that builds on the foundation of the German curriculum, which concludes at the end of Grade 10 with the Mittlerer Schulabschluss (Intermediate School Certificate).

The GIB-DP is an exceptional bridge between German educational standards and international academic pathways. Developed and administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), the GIB Diploma has been officially recognized as equivalent to the German Abitur since 1986 KMK Regulations It opens doors to leading universities not only in Germany but also in over 147 countries worldwide, including top institutions in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and across Europe.

This broad and flexible subject offering allows students to tailor their education according to their strengths, interests, and university aspirations. Core Elements of the IB Diploma Programme

Beyond academics, the GIB-DP places a strong emphasis on the development of students as critical thinkers, compassionate leaders, and lifelong learners. This holistic approach is achieved through the integration of three core components, which are central to the philosophy of the IB and are compulsory for all Diploma Programme students. These elements not only enrich the student experience but also have a direct impact on the awarding of the IB Diploma. Failure to complete any of the core requirements may result in not receiving the diploma, regardless of performance in academic subjects.

• Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Through CAS, students participate in a range of artistic, physical, and service-based activities outside the classroom. These experiences foster personal and interpersonal development, encouraging students to engage with their communities, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and cultivate a sense of social responsibility. While CAS is not graded and does not contribute points to the final diploma score, it is a mandatory requirement. Students must provide evidence of meeting all seven CAS learning outcomes and maintain regular reflection. Note: Failure to complete CAS requirements will result in automatic failure of the IB Diploma, regardless of academic performance.

• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): TOK is an interdisciplinary course that challenges students to examine how knowledge is constructed and evaluated across various disciplines. It encourages students to think critically and reflectively about what they know and how they know it. TOK is assessed through two components: a TOK exhibition (internally assessed and externally moderated) and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title, which is externally assessed. The performance in TOK contributes, along with the Extended Essay, up to 3 bonus points toward the maximum IB diploma score of 45.

• Extended Essay (EE): The EE is a 4,000-word independent research project on a topic chosen by the student, typically within one of their IB subjects. It allows students to develop strong skills in research, analysis, and academic writing. Each student is supported by a supervisor and must complete three formal reflection sessions, documented in the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF). The EE is externally assessed and, together with TOK, can contribute up to 3 additional points to the final diploma result. In summary, while CAS must be completed to qualify for the diploma, performance in TOK and the Extended Essay can influence a student’s final score by contributing bonus points. These core components are essential for shaping well-rounded, reflective, and capable global citizens.
